When Do You Need a Full House Rewire?

If your home was built before the 1980s and the wiring has never been replaced, there is a strong chance it does not meet modern safety standards. A full house rewire is one of the most significant electrical upgrades a homeowner can undertake, and knowing when it is necessary can protect both your property and your family.

Warning Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring

Several indicators suggest that the electrical installation in your home is reaching the end of its useful life. The most common sign is frequently blown fuses or tripping circuit breakers. If your fuse box still contains rewireable fuses rather than modern circuit breakers or RCDs, that alone is a clear sign the system is outdated.

  • Frequent tripping of RCDs or blown fuses
  • Flickering or dimming lights across multiple rooms
  • Discoloured or scorched socket outlets
  • A persistent burning smell near outlets or switches
  • Crackling sounds from switches or sockets
  • Aluminium wiring or fabric-sheathed cables
  • No earth connection on lighting circuits
  • Socket outlets that feel warm to the touch

Why Old Wiring Is Dangerous

Pre-1960s homes in Leicester and across the UK were often wired with rubber-insulated cables that perish over time, leaving bare conductors exposed. Even PVC cabling installed in the 1970s and 1980s can degrade, particularly if it has been subject to overheating. Outdated wiring increases the risk of electric shock, fire, and equipment damage.

Expert Tip

If you are unsure about the age or condition of your wiring, book an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). This inspection will identify whether a full or partial rewire is necessary.

What Happens During a Full Rewire

A full house rewire involves removing all existing cables and replacing them with new twin-and-earth cabling that meets BS 7671 standards. The process typically takes between five and ten days depending on the size of the property. Furniture is moved away from walls, floorboards are lifted, and channels are chased into plaster to run new cables.

At D3C Electrical, we work methodically room by room to minimise disruption. We install a new metal-clad consumer unit with RCBO protection, upgrade all socket and lighting circuits, add earth bonding where required, and provide full certification on completion.

Costs and Timescales

For a typical three-bedroom semi-detached house in Leicester, a full rewire costs between £3,500 and £5,500 including materials, labour, and certification. Larger properties or homes with complex layouts may take longer and cost more. We always provide a fixed-price quote after a free site survey so there are no surprises.

A rewire is also the ideal time to plan for the future. We can run additional circuits for EV chargers, external lighting, garden power, or data cabling. Thinking ahead saves money compared to adding these later.
